Engage has published two major reports on 'Volunteering and the voluntary sector in Somerset', with funding from the Voluntary Sector Partnership in Somerset Project Board using an allocation from the Transforming Local Infrastructure Grant. These have been prepared primarily to help promote partnership working between the local voluntary sector and Somerset County Council, but are being shared more widely to raise awareness of the contribution made by Somerset's volunteers.

The first report 'Volunteering and the Voluntary Sector in Somerset':

  • defines 'volunteering' and 'voluntary sector';
  • identifies the activities and service areas where volunteers and the voluntary sector make significant contributions to Somerset and its local communities;
  • estimates the overall scale of the economic contribution made by the voluntary sector in Somerset;
  • outlines the infrastructure that exists currently in Somerset to promote and support volunteering, and how it is funded;
  • puts the Somerset picture in to a national context;
  • and identifies the main issues facing the voluntary sector in Somerset.

The second report 'Volunteering and the Voluntary Sector in Somerset: Identification of good practice applicable to Somerset' complements the first report by looking at good practice in other areas of the country that could be adopted in Somerset.
