Engage Launches New Volunteering Service

Funding from Somerset County Councillors’ Health and Wellbeing fund enabled Engage Voluntary Sector Development to launch a new volunteer matching service for West Somerset, in Minehead library on Thursday 4 August.

Engage Chief Officer, Katrina Midgley said:

“We are extremely grateful to Cllrs. Christine Lawrence and Terry Venner for allocating part of their Health and Wellbeing budgets to help us promote volunteering in this way.

“Engage has been running Volunteer Centre services from libraries in Taunton Deane for some time, and this funding will enable us to gauge the demand for this kind of provision in Minehead.”

Cllr. Terry Venner said:

“I was delighted to be asked to help and support this fantastic initiative of the Pop-up Volunteer Centre, hosted in Minehead Library, for this initial six months period. We, as a Community, are very fortunate to have so many people willing to be volunteers but unfortunately we always require more.

“This is a golden opportunity for anyone who would like to find out more about volunteering, and how they can use their skills to help others.”

Engage already has a Volunteer Centre, based in Alcombe Village Hall, which matches prospective volunteers with opportunities, either in its own organisation or with other local voluntary groups. The additional session in the library is designed to make volunteering more accessible to people.

Cllr. Lawrence said:

“The Library is a great place for a Pop up Volunteer centre; it is in the Centre of Minehead and a very comfortable place to meet and talk about all the Volunteering opportunities that are in the local area”

The new pop-up volunteer centre will be run by Lesley Culverhouse, who will be available at the library from 10am – 12 noon every Thursday until the middle of January 2017. Lesley will also be available at Engage’s base in Alcombe Village Hall between 10am and 12 noon on Tuesdays or at other times by appointment.

Mrs Midgley said:

“I am delighted that Lesley has joined Engage to run this pilot project, taking volunteering into the community.

“Volunteering can be a fun and interesting way to meet new people and gain new skills, and Engage promotes opportunities across the whole of West Somerset. This matchmaking service can lead to new and exciting relationships, as people make friends and find new interests and abilities.”

The Volunteer Centre offers a tailor-made service to both organisations and individuals: organisations can register volunteering opportunities, which are then promoted through a dedicated volunteering website, and Engage’s own opportunities booklet. At the same time people interested in becoming volunteers can register their details and interests, and the Volunteer Centre staff will help them to identify the right volunteering opportunity for them.
