About Engage

What is Engage?

‘Engage – Voluntary Sector Development’ is a registered Charity (Charity No. 1123668) established in May 2007. Our objectives are:

To promote any charitable purpose for the benefit of the community in the County of Somerset and, in particular, the advancement of education, the protection of health and the relief of poverty, distress and sickness.

To promote and organise co-operation in the advancement of the above purposes and bring together representatives of voluntary organisations and statutory authorities in the County of Somerset.

On its formation, Engage incorporated the former West Somerset Council for Voluntary Services (CVS) that had been founded in 1985.

Engage has a Management Committee, whose members are also the formal Trustees of the Charity and undertake their roles on a voluntary basis. The Chair of Engage is Tom Winsborough and the Chief Officer of Engage is Katrina Midgley.

How is Engage Funded?

Engage operates as a company limited by guarantee without share capital registered in England and Wales (Company No. 06257697). It is a non-profit-making organisation, whose primary sources of income are money from the sale of reused furniture, an annual grant of £1,000 from West Somerset Council and an annual payment of £22,500 from Taunton Deane Borough Council. Membership of Engage is available for an annual subscription for voluntary groups that operate in and around West Somerset - please click to see the current Engage Membership.

Engage was able to replace its ageing van in January 2013 thanks to support from a number of local charities and organisations. Grant funding totalling £20,000 was secured to buy a replacement second-hand van. Somerset Community Foundation provided £5,000, £10,000 come from Western Somerset Local Action for Rural Communities (LARC) and the remaining £5,000 from Restore Hope West Somerset. The replacement van is in operation, with its new signage helping to promote Engage in its journeys around West Somerset.

Financial support to Engage has been provided previously by the Big Lottery, Capacity Builders, Somerset County Council, Somerset PCT and Minehead Town Council.

All income is used wholly to support the achievement of the above objectives.

Donations to Engage can be made directly - please phone 01643 707123 or call in/write to the Engage offices at Alcombe Village Hall (please click for contact details).
