General Volunteering

Local Volunteer Centres - Engage's free match-making service

Our society thrives on a small army of volunteers in our community who generously give up their time, skills and energy. But the process is not just one way. Volunteering can be so rewarding and that is the key to a successful relationship.

At Engage we have been working to place volunteers with local organisations and charities since 2005. Each year we handle around 200 expressions of interest in volunteering at the West Somerset Volunteer Centre and in early 2014 we opened a new Taunton Deane Volunteer Centre.

In West Somerset, if you are an organisation wishing to offer a volunteering opportunity or an individual interested in becoming a volunteer, then please ring us on 01643 707123 or send us an e-mail ( We can then arrange to meet, chat through your precise requirements and look at potential matching volunteers/opportunities from our extensive volunteering database. If you are in Taunton Deane the contact points for the Taunton Deane Volunteer Centre are: 07506 371409 or

The West Somerset Volunteer Centre at Alcombe Village Hall, Minehead is open 10.00am to 1pm on Thursdays *. Appointments are available outside these times.

The Taunton Deane Volunteer Centre is open 9.30am to 12.30pm on Tuesdays * at the Central Library, Paul Street, Taunton.

Volunteer Centres are also run at Wellington, Wiveliscombe and Priorswood libraries - please click here for specific dates.

*  Session times/dates may change depending on staff availability - please watch our Facebook page for details.

Opportunities are also advertised on a dedicated volunteering website '' (please click ).

Engage's trustee board have signed up to the Keep Volunteering Voluntary campaign, and have adopted the following policy statement:

"As charities and voluntary organisations we know the value of volunteering. Volunteering means people independently choosing to give their time freely to help others and make the world a better place. Workfare schemes force unemployed people to carry out unpaid work or face benefit sanctions that can cause hardship and destitution.  We believe in keeping volunteering voluntary and will not participate in government workfare schemes.”
